Murcia is a city in southeastern Spain, capital of the Murcia region and center of its culture and history. Located at the confluence of the Segura and Guadalentín rivers, in a fertile area known as la Huerta, Murcia thrives on agriculture and tourism.
Its unique natural landscape and rich background have made exploring the city a truly unforgettable experience.
Here are my picks for the best places to see in Murcia.
1. Visit a museum
On Paseo Alfonso X El Sabio is the Museum of the Convent of Santa Clara la Real, in an old royal palace, with valuable artistic, archaeological and architectural remains from the Arab and Christian era. In the same area, the Archaeological Museum of Murcia houses the collection of Iberian archaeological pieces found in the region. In 16 rooms, the museum takes a journey through Prehistory to the pre-Moorish era.
If you prefer to see the more artistic side of the city, visit the Salzillo Museum and the Almudí Palace and Art Gallery. Dedicated to the famous sculptor Francisco Salzillo, the Salzillo Museum houses his Baroque works of art, such as the steps carried in Holy Week processions and the 500-piece Nativity Scene of Salzillo. Originally built as a warehouse in 1556, the Almudí Palace now houses the Department of Culture, the Almudí Artistic Center and the Municipal Archives of Murcia.
2. Visit to historical places
Nothing speaks more of Murcian elegance and devotion than Murcia Cathedral, which stands proudly in Plaza del Cardenal Belluga with its magnificent bell tower. This Gothic church has a Baroque façade and has undergone many renovations since its foundation stone was laid in 1388. Paying €6.07 for adults, you can take a guided tour of its architecture, passing through its 23 chapels, the museum that houses the treasures of the Cathedral and even the 90-meter-high bell tower.
Right next to the church is the Episcopal Palace. On Calle Trapería is the gentlemen’s club of Murcia, the Real Casino de Murcia. Although it has been a private club since the 19th century, the Royal Casino was declared a National Historic Building in 1983 and can now be visited. Explore its extravagant halls, sculptures and paintings and enjoy the many cultural activities that take place throughout the year.
