Ferrari 488 GTB information
Ferrari never ceases to surprise us, and this 488 GTB, a two-seater successor to the well-positioned 458 Italia, is no exception. Straight from the Maranello factory comes this two-seater supercar with berlinetta bodywork that leaves everyone who sees it speechless.
Designed by Flavio Manzoni, the 488 GTB has harmonious lines clearly based on its predecessor, but revised and improved aerodynamically, with a larger front opening and a redesigned roof line.
There are many design elements that remind us of Ferrari’s single-seaters, and with its racing experience, there are many technologies that can be transferred to everyday vehicles, either to increase performance, safety or comfort.
This car is the gateway to the brand today and represents the competitive values and historical heritage of Ferrari in terms of performance.
The ceramic brakes, the perfectly tuned gearbox, the aerodynamically improved design, and of course, the engine, are the elements that distinguish this Ferrari 488 GTB that any lover of the brand will appreciate.
The monocoque chassis of the 488 GTB designed by the house of the cabalino rampante, makes it practically immune to torsion at high speeds, and its self-locking differential guarantees grip in every curve.
This car is definitely a very tempting option if you like the brand and want to try a bit of the experience offered by a twin-turbo propulsion system. No matter how hard you push it, it never seems to exhaust its reserve of power, which is why it makes several hypercars on the market tremble and makes it hard to believe its capabilities with a V8 engine. This demonstrates the elegant way of solving the displacement problem implemented by the engineers of the northern Italian company.
The Ferrari 488 in all its versions mounts an engine model F154 developed in house as all its engines, it is a V8 Biturbo with 3902 liters of displacement. This means that each cylinder displaces 488 cubic centimeters, and hence the name of the model.
The V8 is built entirely of aluminum, and in terms of lubrication it uses a dry sump system, in order to lower the engine in the vehicle and reduce its center of gravity. This translates into much more stable handling at high speeds.
The twin-turbo technology of this engine was revised and updated, using low-density materials for the turbochargers, as these reduce the inertia of rotation and are more efficient in handling the heat produced by the exhaust.
This turbocharged power system takes the V8 to 670 horsepower, and a maximum torque of 760 newton at 8000 revolutions, but which is fully available from the 3000 rpm range that takes it from 0 to 100 in 3 seconds.
This powertrain is based on the aspirated version of its successor, the 458 Italia, but improved and updated with a more efficient direct injection system that reduces consumption to 11.4 liters per 100 kilometers. This is achieved without sacrificing the top speed of 340 kilometers per hour, a little more extreme than the previous model.
All this working together, manages to bring this model to perform the quarter mile in 10.4 seconds, a pretty good number for a production car.
The 488 integrates a 7-speed automatic gearbox manufactured by Getrag that is based on an improved version of the one fitted on the 458 Italia, but retains the same configuration of ratios. The first four short ratios are used for immediate starting and full torque, and the last three longer ones are used to optimize cruising speed.
The interior is classic Ferrari, highly customizable, with elements of very fine quality present, leather, wood, aluminum, alcantara, or carbon fiber, all these materials can be combined to taste of each client.
The entertainment center has the basic connectivity functions, and a sound system designed and built by JBL, which claims to be able to play your favorite music with 1280 watts of power. But considering the symphony of the two exhaust outlets at the tail end of the car, you’ll rarely be playing music at full volume.
When you come out of a corner and put your foot down, the thrust is incredible, but the seats hold you firmly in place with their peripheral upholstery, which keeps you in a very comfortable and centered posture behind the wheel, a racing but stylish approach. The upholstery material is free and the bottom can be carbon fiber as an optional.
Ferrari’s well-known Italian luxury covers the entire interior of the car, and although the dashboard is oriented slightly towards the driver to put the controls within easy reach, a small digital display in front of the co-driver also gives you real-time driving information.
As in all Ferrari models, the main objective is to attract attention, to attract looks, for its aesthetics, for its sound, and for the emblem mounted on the hood. But neither do they lose interest in technological development and that is evident in this 488 GTB.
The aerodynamic lines were revised based on the previous platform, improving it with elements such as the front spoiler that reminds us almost exactly the one used in Formula 1 cars. There are huge side air intakes that cool the heat exchangers of the twin-turbo system.
This model mounts an optimized exhaust system, made of lighter materials and that give a specific resonance to the engine but still mounts the dual catalytic converter system to reduce emissions and achieve homologate the Euro6 standard in force throughout the territory of the European Union since 2015.
The sum of all these design elements, make this version of the 488 a very attractive one to consider, if you want to have style in everyday life without losing the opportunity to get some strong emotions.
The automatic mode is perfect for urban driving, but if you are a fearless driver the manual mode of Ferrari’s brutally tight box will bring more than a smile to your face with its power delivery.
