Ferrari 812 Superfast information
Nothing arouses more excitement among car fanatics than a front-engine, rear-wheel drive Ferrari. Such is the case with this Ferrari 812 Superfast, a grand tourer that takes us back to the company’s golden years of designing legendary big cars with huge fronts that give way to those insane Italian engines.
Inspired by the F12 Berlinetta, this new Ferrari model is pure power, with elegant lines that remind us of the Ferrari identity, luxury and Italian bearing, but with raw muscle. It is powerful and becomes a driving experience quite similar to the company’s classic models.
This model is not the recommended entry to the brand, but if you already have previous experience with such powerful cars, or if you want to experience for the first time the strong emotion of driving it, it is almost certainly a very fun experience.
The line on which the Ferrari 812 Superfast is based, its predecessors, the F12 Berlinetta and the F12 Tdi, is clear for all to see. But the outstanding element is that this design was made entirely by Ferrari without collaborating with any other automaker as previously happened with Pininfarina.
This car will give you experiences that no other on the market can give you, a car aimed at drivers with a love for speed and who are willing to have those 800 horsepower at the tip of the toe. It is an intoxicating sensation that, if you are daring and explore the experience on the track, you are sure to enjoy and that will bring a smile to your face, an emotion that Ferrari has already accustomed us to and that seems to be modernizing and intensifying as time goes by.
The Ferrari 812 Superfast is an Italian beast with a mid-front engine configuration. The engine is slightly above the front axle but the weight is distributed in the best possible way towards the center of the vehicle, which gives it very good handling characteristics.
This engine is a wild V12 in the brand’s traditional configuration, with 6.5 liters of displacement it was the most powerful naturally aspirated engine of that year. It produces 800 horsepower at 8500 rpm, and 718 newton of torque at 7500 rpm.
This V12 shoots the Ferrari 812 Superfast from 0 to 100 in 2.9 seconds and from 0 to 200 in less than 8 seconds, its top speed electronically limited by the vehicle’s computer is capable of reaching 368 kilometers per hour.
These 800 horsepower are obtained in part by the redesign process that the company’s famous V12 underwent. A different aluminum alloy was used to reduce weight, stronger pistons, and a high-pressure direct injection system that reaches almost 5,000 pounds per inch of fuel pressure.
Another innovative system applied in this engine is the variable geometry intake, which, depending on the engine speed, varies the diameter of the ducts to always supply the right amount of air.
Sad news for brand purists is that this is likely to be the last naturally aspirated V12 engine in production as the Italians plan to develop more efficient hybrid technologies.
The transmission of the 812 Superfast did not undergo major changes with respect to the one mounted on the F12, with 7-speed automatic and dual clutch has the ability to shoot all the torque in the first few gears.
The electronics of the transmission was updated, the new more efficient shifters allow upshifts up to 30% faster and 40% in downshifts and with the same 5 classic Ferrari driving modes.
The interior, also very classic Ferrari looks a bit tweaked in luxury, everything is covered in leather or alcantara except for a small segment of the center console that can be ordered in carbon fiber or black plastic.
The dashboard is wonderfully simple, a trademark Ferrari analog tachometer recessed into the cluster, surrounded by two 8-inch screens that display information of interest to the driver and the navigation system settings.
The sound is again part of the alliance between JBL and Ferrari, the entertainment center is quite basic, as this car is geared towards the driving experience, and its Formula1-inspired leather-covered steering wheel makes this clear.
A second screen is embedded in the front of the co-driver, integrating it to the driving experience and showing real-time data, such as acceleration, total speed and a digital graphic with the revolutions per minute that has a cut-off line at 8500 revolutions, which, when fully depressed, activate the symphony of the 12 cylinders.
This Ferrari stands out in the market, and is that, if we analyze the options, has no rival in the market, is the only car with this power and front engine rear-wheel drive that is marketed, being the only nearby option the Aston Martin DBS SL.
This high performance GT is equipped with four-wheel steering, Ferrari opted for this technology to facilitate the handling of this car with huge hood, making it feel like a very comfortable vehicle in a city environment, and dominate the curves on any track you decide to take.
The Ferrari 812 Superfast has sculptural lines worthy of the great Italian Renaissance masters but designed with data obtained from tireless hours of analysis in the Maranello wind tunnel, an essential tool for designing supercars.
The design of this elaborate car allows to see the front air intakes of the hood and side gills, which in theory puts the driver in line of sight with the four wheels of the vehicle, which is known to appreciate given the dimensions of the car. They do not make themselves felt by how well soundproofed the cabin is entirely covered with leather and that in the softest driving mode very well conceals the roar of its engine.
