The Levante might be Maserati’s most controversial model; it was the Italian brand’s first SUV when it was introduced for the 2017 model year. While the Levante isn’t the fastest or most powerful luxury SUV in terms of performance, it certainly has one of the best-sounding engines. Under the hood of most Levante models is a twin-turbocharged V-6 that sends its 350 horsepower — or 430 horsepower in the Modena — to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission.
A 2017 Levante with a V-6 engine achieves a 0-100 km/h time of 5.1 seconds, beating the Mercedes-AMG GLE53. The Modena S and Trofeo models have a twin-turbocharged V-8 with 550 and 580 hp, respectively. On the test track, a GTS (to be replaced by the Modena S in 2022) was launched to 100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds, while a Trofeo did so in 3.6.
With its adaptive dampers in Sport mode, the Levante’s handling feels uncanny when driving on all but the softest of surfaces. Comfort levels are much more pleasant, although the suspension is a little slack, with the dampers at their default settings.
On paper, the Levante is not a fuel-efficient car. In fact, its EPA estimates for the V-6 models – 4 mph city and 5 mph highway – are closer to V-8-powered rivals than other V-6s.
However, in the real world, the V-6 impresses with a much higher highway fuel economy result than its ratings suggest, at 10.2 km/h. The V-8-powered models were rated at 5.5 km in the city and 8.5 km on the highway, and got 8.5 km in our tests.
Although the Maserati Levante 2022 is available in four finishes: GT, Modena, Modena S and Trofeo. Each model has a different engine, eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive are standard across the range.
At first glance, the Levante looks as opulent as you’d expect from a Maserati. Leather seats and dashboard are standard, although you have to pay extra for the extended leather package to get the full effect. However, on closer inspection, some of the plastics seem surprisingly cheap.
Infotainment is handled by an 8.4-inch touch screen and a rotary knob. It has satellite navigation, a DAB radio and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for smartphones.
Even taller drivers should be able to ride comfortably in the Levante, thanks to the extensive adjustment of the seat and steering wheel.
